iPhone storage full after new iPhone launch season
Why storage fills up right after a launch
A new iPhone arrives with every photo and video Quick Start could copy, duplicates included, plus whatever already landed again from iCloud Photos as it finishes syncing. None of that is new content, it is the old library showing up on a new screen, and it can make the storage bar climb for days after setup while nothing has actually changed.
Check what is actually using the space
Open Settings, General, iPhone Storage. The bar at the top breaks the total into apps, photos and system data, and the Recommendations section below it points at the obvious wins: offloading unused apps, and reviewing large attachments. The Photos row shows one total, not what inside it is heavy, which is why a launch season library often looks bigger than it should.
Built-in iPhone ways to try first
- In Settings, your name, iCloud, Photos, turn on Optimize iPhone Storage. It keeps full size originals in iCloud and smaller versions on the device, which only helps once you have enough iCloud storage to cover the whole library.
- Open Photos, Utilities, Duplicates, and merge what it finds. This only catches exact or near identical pairs it recognizes, not everything a fresh transfer can bring in.
- Open Utilities, Recently Deleted, and tap Delete All. Anything removed during setup still counts against storage until this is emptied.
- Back in iPhone Storage, offload apps you have not opened since the move. Their documents and data stay, so reinstalling later picks up where you left off.
What Poof adds
Poof reads the whole library on the device in one pass and sorts it by what is actually taking the space, which is faster than checking each built-in screen by hand.
- Open Poof and allow access to your photos. Nothing leaves the device.
- Open Duplicates to clear every exact copy for free, including the ones a transfer brought along twice.
- Poof Pro groups similar shots so you keep the sharpest of each burst, lists your biggest videos so you can compress them to 1080p, 720p or 540p, and finds screenshots and blurry shots left over from the old phone.
Nothing is deleted until you tap Poof them and confirm in Apple's own dialog, and the videos keep their original until you choose to replace it.
If it still looks full
Give iCloud Photos a day to finish syncing before judging the number, since a partial sync can make storage look worse than it is. If it is still tight after that, the Photos row in iPhone Storage and the steps above cover most of it, and a 60-second session in Poof once a week keeps the backlog from building up again.

Questions
Why is my storage full right after moving to a new iPhone?
Quick Start copies the whole library over from the old iPhone, duplicates and all, and iCloud Photos keeps syncing in the background for a while after that, so the new phone can look fuller than expected in the first days.
Does Optimize iPhone Storage fix a full iPhone?
Not fully. It keeps smaller versions on the device and the full size originals in iCloud, so it only helps once there is enough iCloud storage to hold the whole library, and it does nothing about duplicates or old screenshots already there.
Will deleting old iOS update files free space?
A little. Settings, General, iPhone Storage lists any leftover update files or offloaded apps you can remove. The bigger space is almost always photos and videos, not the system files.
Is clearing duplicates on Poof free?
Yes. The scan and deleting every exact copy of a photo or a video are free. Similar shots, screenshots and video compression are part of Poof Pro.
The scan is free. So is deleting every exact copy.
